Getting Started
What is BMX?
BMX, or Bicycle Motocross, is a sport where riders of all ages use pedal power and skill to manuever a bike over jumps, banked corners, and other obstacles. A lap around the track takes approximately 30-45 seconds. BMX was created by kids but has become popular with older racers as well. Unlike most sports, BMX racing depends completely on individual performance, unlike the combined performance of a team, or team effort.
Low Cost Family Entertainment
BMX is an excellent individual and family-oriented sport. For many families, BMX racing becomes a weekly ritual. Spectators always watch for FREE and everyone is welcome to come and cheer on their favorite racer (or racers). It is also quite common to see mom, dad, brother and sister ALL racing within their own classes.
BMX Racing Facts:
Statistics have proven that BMX racing is one of the safest of all sports today. Part of this is due to the mandatory safety requirements. All riders MUST wear a long-sleeved shirt, long pants, and a full-faced helmet. Racers are categorized by wheel size (20″ or 24″), then subdivided into girls and boys classes, age groups, and–for 20″ riders–skill levels. The age groups range from 5 & under (20″) to 56 & older cruiser (24″) classes.
For the 20″-ers, age groups fall into three skill levels: Novice, Intermediate, and Expert. All riders start as Novices and must work their way up to the next level by winning races. Novices move up to Intermediate after eight first-place wins; Intermediates move up to Expert after earning 25 wins as an Intermediate.
Cruiser classes (24″) consists of boys and girls categories and range from 9 & under to 56 & over.
How Much Will It Cost?
Every rider must attain current USABMX membership prior to riding on the track. We do offer a one-day trial for $1 to experience the track but to continue access all riders must obtain membership with USABMX, which can be purchased for $45 at the track. Membership entitles you to race at the track, provides you with medical insurance coverage for track-related injuries, and allows you to race at local and national ABA tracks across the country. With the one-year membership, you will also receive the BMXer, a monthly magazine with exciting articles and tips, current point standings, and nationwide race coverage. Once a USABMX member, the only other costs will be a $10 entry fee for races and $5 for separate practice days. A typical BMX race includes three qualifying motos (heats) and a main event. Main event finishers earn trophies for 1st-3rd, along with USABMX race points that tally for overall point standings and number plate designations at the end of the year.
